Literacy

Library Books

Our literacy program is designed to teach students to become strategic readers and writers. Based on the San Diego Unified School District's K-12 Literacy Framework, students participate in a variety of instructional approaches during Readers and Writers Workshops every day, including:

  • read alouds,
  • shared reading,
  • guided reading,
  • independent reading,
  • word study,
  • modeled writing,
  • shared writing,
  • guided writing
  • and independent writing.

Questioning strategies are used to strengthen and develop:

  • higher-level thinking skills,
  • comprehension,
  • and student-to-student interaction or accountable talk.

Speaking and listening skills are also an integral part of our literacy instruction.
