Our History

Welcome to Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School, a California Gold Ribbon Schoo! Our school opened September 4, 2001, with approximately 325 students in Kindergarten through grade 4.

We moved to our beautiful new campus on Cypress Canyon Road in fall 2008. Today EBS has about 750 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We also have a Transitional Kindergarten class for students who just missed the birthday cut-off for kindergarten.

Who we are

At E.B. Scripps, our students and staff perform well above district and state averages on standardized tests each year. In fact, our base Academic performance index (API) score far exceeds the statewide performance target of 800.

In our school community, all stakeholders are teachers and learners. Each learner is encouraged to achieve academic and social success, enjoy learning, celebrate diversity, develop analytical skills and model exemplary behavior. We empower our learners to be responsible for their own inquiry. Our learners are active participants in their academic development, and every individual has a responsibility not just to perform a task, but to do it to the best of their ability.
Our school is special because of our supportive and involved parents, our students who come to school eager to learn, and our compassionate faculty who are devoted to the success of our students and to continually improving instruction so that we remain at the forefront of educational innovation. In addition, our teachers collaborate, support each other, and value the opportunity to learn from each other. EBS students, parents, teachers and community members work as a team to achieve our goal: academic, social and emotional success for every student.

We are committed to character building and embrace character education as an integral part of our curriculum. To excel, learners require an environment that encourages them to take risks. All members of the E.B. Scripps school community work together to create a nurturing environment so that learners can take risks, think critically, and ask questions about their world without anxiety.

Awards

Gold Ribbon Logo

In 2016 EBS was named a California Gold Ribbon School by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. This award recognizes California schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all students, including English Learners. Only five elementary schools (out of 116) in the San Diego Unified School District are being recognized.

"These schools shine as bright beacons for others, putting forth an exemplary effort to ensure that every student is ready for 21st century college and careers," Torlakson said. "California teachers are developing an education model for the nation, training the students of today to be the problem-solvers, inventors, and pioneers of tomorrow."

Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School is a San Diego Premier 21st-Century Schoolhouse known for its academic excellence and fine arts enrichment programs.

Our success has been recognized by California Business for Education Excellence, an organization dedicated to raising achievement and closing achievement gaps at all grade levels. They bestowed upon us their Honor Roll Award for our continued academic success.

California Distinguished School Logo

We were also designated a 2010 California Distinguished School in recognition of high student achievement. Our commitment to teacher collaboration and departmentalization in the upper grades were spotlighted as two of our many signature practices. It is because we set high standards for our students and ourselves that we are able to enjoy such great success!
Our focus on excellence in teaching and learning, though key to our performance, is not the only factor when reflecting on our amazing school. Sitestaff, parents, community members and volunteers work together to ensure the success of every student.

In 2017-2018, EBS was named a School Wellness Champion by the SDUSD for our exemplary implementation of a School Wellness Program.

In October of 2018 EBS was received the Quality School in Every Neighborhood Award from San Diego Unified School Distict for exemplary Family and Community Engagement. EBS was honored at a ceremony with the Board of Education.

Our Mascot

Penguins

Miss Ellen’s favorite colors were black and white so the penguin was chosen as our mascot. When EBS first opened the school colors were black and white. At some point someone decided a splash of color should be added and red was added to the mix. Today our school colors are black, white and red.
